HR Generalist

Department:  Operations

Classification:  Full-Time - Exempt

Reports to:  Deputy Director

Position Description:

The Human Resources Generalist (HR Generalist) is responsible for a wide range of human resource functions such as administering employee benefits, organizing trainings, managing the professional development program, recruiting and onboarding staff, and creating and facilitating policy and procedures.  The HR Generalist will use human resource information systems to ensure all employee records are up-to-date and confidential.  The HR Generalist will assist in analyzing employee data, employee surveys, exit interviews, and other metrics in order to enhance and improve HR programs and services.

The HR Generalist will have a strong focus on customer service and serve as the main point of contact for employees' inquiries on HR-related matters and direct the day-to-day functions of human resources.  It is the responsibility of the HR Generalist to ensure the HR department's operations run smoothly and effectively to deliver maximum value to the organization.  

The HR Generalist will also support administrative functions pertaining to the Operations Department and participate in employee committees.  This position reports to the Deputy Director.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Administer compensation and benefit plans
  • Assist in talent acquisition and recruitment processes
  • Conduct employee onboarding and help organize training & development initiatives
  • Provide support to employees in various HR-related topics such as leaves and compensation and resolve any issues that may arise
  • Promote HR programs to create an efficient and conflict-free workplace
  • Assist in the development and implementation of human resource policies
  • Propose and initiate any revisions to the employee handbook as appropriate or necessary
  • Undertake tasks around performance management
  • Gather and analyze data with useful HR metrics, like time to hire and employee turnover rates
  • Organize quarterly and annual employee performance reviews
  • Maintain employee files and records in electronic and paper form
  • Enhance job satisfaction by resolving issues promptly, applying new perks and benefits, and organizing team building activities
  • Ensure compliance with labor regulations
  • Manage the unemployment process, including responding to unemployment filings, protesting inappropriate claim requests, and participating in hearings as required
  • Manage the administration of workers' compensation claims/accident reports


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • No supervisory responsibilities, but this position will serve as the liaison to the employee-based culture committee, serving in an advisory role to staff committee members


  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other HR software programs and data management systems necessary to perform the job satisfactorily
  • Financial acumen and a track record of managing an annual cycle of deliverables

Education and Experience:

  • BSc/BA in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or relevant field; minimum of 5-7 years demonstrated experience; additional HR training a plus


  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist
  • Understanding of general human resources policies and procedures
  • Good knowledge of employment/labor laws and best practices
  • Outstanding knowledge of MS Office; HRIS systems (e.g. PeopleSoft) will be a plus
  • Desire to work as part of a team with a results-driven approach
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect an ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external customers
  • Strong and proactive problem solving and decision-making capability to anticipate problems and recommend changes to procedures/precedents within established policies
  • Emotional maturity
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and adapt in a changing environment with competing demands
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
